The challenge:
This undertaking – winner of a 2024 Queensland Master Painters Award – is testament to Grant Painters’ project management skills.
The location of this suite of premium offices – located at 11 Charters Towers Road, Hermit Park – on one of Townsville’s busiest roads just minutes from the city centre – presented its own set of challenges.
In addition, the three businesses occupying the premises had to remain open to the public throughout the entire three-week exterior repaint.
Grant Painters tackled these challenges head-on, crafting a detailed traffic management plan to ensure the safety of both workers and the public.
The scope of work included repainting concrete tilt-up walls, tilt panel capping, roller doors, and safety bollards, retexturing of exterior sheeting, and fresh line-marking.
A team of five painters was complemented by three traffic controllers who expertly managed the flow of vehicles and pedestrians, even redirecting one lane of traffic approximately 200 metres before and outside the building.
The complexity was further heightened by the proximity of a school and a bus stop, requiring extra caution and coordination.

To access all areas of the premises, Grant Painters deployed three spider lifts from its own fleet as well as a scissor lift.
These elevated work platforms (EWPs) offered significant advantages over traditional scaffolding – they could be set up in minutes and minimised the risk of public misuse, a crucial consideration in such a busy location.
With a council permit limiting work hours between 9 am and 2.30 pm, precision was key.
Exclusion zones to prevent customer access were carefully timed, often restricted to short windows such as lunch hours, to allow work directly above the shopfronts.
Even the car park at the rear of the premises required meticulous management, especially during the line-marking phase.

The results:
The result of this coordinated effort was nothing short of transformative.
In addition to repairing the walls, a two-coat Taubmans paint system was applied to match the existing exterior colour scheme, and the interior was also given a fresh coat of paint.
Altogether, the team invested a total of 1000 hours, completely revitalising the appearance of the premises and ensuring it would look sharp for years to come.
